Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: 96 points Le Pergole Torte 2007 (100% sangiovese; 13% alcohol) Deep, full red. Complex, gorgeous nose melds ripe red cherry, tobacco, iron, cinnamon and a floral element. Suave and bright, but fatter and deeper than the Montevertine, with perfectly integrated acidity to buffer its voluptuous texture and captivating flavors of ripe red cherry, spicy plum, licorice and underbrush. Finishes broad, with compellingly mouthcoating tannins and outstanding length. A great wine and another example of the incredible heights sangiovese can achieve in the right hands and in the right terroirs, such as Radda, where Montevertine is located.
93 points Montevertine Rosso 2007 "(a mainly sangiovese wine with small amounts of canaiolo nero and colorino; 13% alcohol) Bright red. Wonderfully floral, pure aromas of sour red cherry, cranberry and violet. Bright and minerally on entry, then tight and youthfully acidic in the middle, with hints of marzipan, fresh red berries and citrus fruits. Boasts an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and a firm tannic spine, finishing juicy and bright, with a crunchy texture and noteworthy precision. This exceptional wine explodes with perfume and flavor. Even better than the great 2001, this is a true monument to the greatness that can be achieved by sangiovese blended with canaiolo nero."
Wine Advocate / A. Galloni: I was blown away by the two wines I tasted from Montevertine and proprietor Martino Manetti. These high altitude vineyards in Radda seem to have benefitted from the heat of 2006, and the results are striking. The 2006 Montevertine and Pergole Torte are even better than they were last year when I tasted them from cask.
96 points Le Pergole Torte 2006 What a pleasure it is to taste the 2006 Le Pergole Torte now that it is in bottle. The wine reveals superior density and richness in an especially generous style for this wine. Notes of smoke, licorice, leather and underbrush develop with air, adding layers of complexity to the dark red fruit. Today the tannins are a bit on the firm side as is typically the case when this wine is young, but it is impossible not to admire the 2006 Pergole Torte for its superb purity. The heat of the vintage has given the fruit in these high altitude vineyards a level of ripeness and depth that is unusual, all while maintaining the classic sense of structure that defines the best Pergole Tortes. Run, don’t walk?.this is breathtaking juice no one who loves Italian wine will want to be without. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2031.
93 points Montevertine Rosso 2006 Grace, elegance, poise. These are just some of the descriptors that come to mind as the sublime 2006 Montevertine (Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino) opens up in the glass. This ethereal, mid-weight wine possesses striking inner perfume of sweet red fruit, flowers and licorice. Were it not for the tell-tale Sangiovese acidity, the 2006 Montevertine might easily be mistaken for Pinot Noir. There is remarkably purity and integrity to the wine, not to mention stunning clarity and finessed yet firm tannins that hold everything together all the way through to the long, finessed finish. This exemplary Montevertine is not to be missed. Readers who want to enjoy the 2006 for its primary beauty can drink the wine today, but it is sure to acquire plenty of tertiary complexity in bottle as well. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
